Why people cheat? If you cheat why you play?

Think about why some people steal? They want to become rich without doing useful work :)
they do it for the power and glory and all the chicks a high rating will attract
I've wondered this same thing before. Of course stockfish can beat anyone. What do people gain from cheating? At least robbers get money. A high rating someone artificially cheats to get they can't defend the rating for real.
CafeMOrphy said it all. HIghrate Elo is a girlmagnet
I want to make something perfectly clear. I haven't done this in years, and certainly never on Lichess. But back in my younger years just for kicks I used to do that sometimes on Yahoo chess.
I'm responding to this thread because it seems strange, even disingenuous that everyone who responded doesn't have the foggiest idea why someone would do this when to me it seems pretty simple.
At least in my case it was, just for the fun of fooling people. Making them think they are playing a human and they are doing very poorly . "why do I suck at chess all of a sudden" and what they don't realize is it's because it's a computer. Ha ha.
Have any of you who claim they don't understand ever played a trick on someone. Was it fun? Then you can understand.
Of course I just did it once in a blue moon when I was absolutely bored. What purpose it would serve to put a lot of effort into it to get a high rating as some people seem to try to do is beyond me.
@wonquestioniqtest
I know you said you cheated once in a blue moon years ago, but if we ever get paired, I'm aborting our game.

And no, "the fun of fooling people" does not answer the question of why people cheat, not for me anyways.
