Best war movies, pre-1970

A lot of great classics have been mentioned that I haven't seen yet. I'll have to try them sometime!

@morphyms1817, what did you think of "The Bedford Incident"?
@rachel8 I ordered the dvd recently, when I had caught about an hour of the movie on tv. Stunning performances: Poitier, Widmark, Eric Portman as the German commander. I have not watched it through yet, hopefully this week.
And of course if you're looking for war's aftermath, there's always 1946's The Murderers Are Among Us (Germany's first post-war production).
Spartacus (3rd servile war)

Alexander Nevsky, for the soundtrack if nothing else

The Good The Bad and the Ugly (you can think of it as a civil war movie)
