Why do you play chess?

What's so good about this game? What drives us to play the game?

Why are we here?
Stimulates my brain in a way that nothing else does. That's one of the reasons I continue to play, anyway. As for what drove me to it in the first place, it was just curiosity. I wanted to experience something I had yet to.
Its actually made me smarter. Good for memory and being able to find solutions in real life faster.
Started as a way to piss off the school board. Once I became good, everyone expected me to play.
#6 LOL. #5 I agree however getting drunk made my thinking abilities go down. So I guess I am average or slightly above average.
Meet h0t chicks. Haha jk.
I play because I enjoy the challenging battle puzzle game against another human. Chess feels like a more intellectual activity that boosts my thinking skillz. There's also the community aspect as you have lots of people who play and clubs everywhere to socialize (even if you're not meeting h0t chicks :-)
My friend here on Lichess taught me to play chess for the beauty of it.

I consider chess an art, and accept all those responsibilities which art places upon its devotees. ~ chess quote by Alexander Alekhine

I used to think like this:

A sport, a struggle for results and a fight for prizes. I think that the discussion about “chess is science or chess is art” is already inappropriate. The purpose of modern chess is to reach a result. ~ chess quote by Alexander Morozevich
